Haunted by History: Spectres in a Small Town looks at historic buildings in the midwestern town of Naperville, Illinois, where the author lives.

The collection of short stories was written for kids ten and older, delivering facts about local history cleverly disguised as ghostly tales.

Following extensive research into the lives of the original inhabitants, Kate imagines these town elders in supernatural situations and crafts a chilling tale. As she likes to say to the parents of her young readers:

     "They'll learn so much history,
                   it's scary!"

Make a Spooky Victorian Toy!

It looks like a quiet cemetery scene, but wait a minute! Above the graves, a ghost appears in mid-air!

During the Victorian age, children played with a popular paper toy called the thaumatrope. Used by Peter Mark Roget in the 1820's to demonstrate the persistence of vision, the thaumtrope starts with two separate pictures. For instance, one picture is of a peaceful graveyard and the other picture is of a rising ghost. Rapidly alternating between the two pictures, it looks like the ghost is appearing in the sky above the cemetery!

Make your own "Ghost in the Graveyard" thaumatrope by clicking here to print the pictures and directions.
